Our limited estate production organic extra virgin olive oils come from a unique landscape, Taberna’s desert in Almería, Andalusia, Spain: the only desert in the whole of Europe with more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year. Our production is not only organic, but also sustainable. We produce solar energy in our mill, we re-use the waste from the production to make a compost/natural fertilizer, and the olive pits are used as fuel for the boiler.
Oro del Desierto is a family-owned and operated business located in Tabernas, Spain. If you combine the climate conditions, with more than 3000 sunshine hours/year and without extreme thermal changes and the extra care we take in the whole process – cold pressed within eight hours after harvesting the fruit – the result is our 100% Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil with all its delicate characteristics and nuances of flavour. The highest quality and consistency has always been an important concept to our family.
On our family estates we grow 25,000 olive trees of 4 different cultivars: Arbequina, Picual, Hojiblanca and the local variety Lechín. We do a special blend of them and also monocultivars. All our olive groves are organic certified by UE, NOP and JAS rules.
Our milling and bottling plant is integrated in a Old Olive Oil Mill from the 1920’s which operated till 1960’s and after that was abandoned. Rafael Alonso bought the building in the late 90’s, restored it and installed the new Organic Oil Mill, restaurant, museum and deli shop where visitors may delight in a spot of regional gastronomy of Andalusia where olive oil is the main course.
We reuse all the waste during the process as a fertilizer (pulp) or fuel (seeds) in our own estates and we produce solar energy; our company is 100% sustainable. When you purchase our Organic Olive Oils you are dealing directly with a family who makes this premium gourmet organic extra virgin olive oil with care, the new technology and true passion.
